Buy Back Policy

1. Introduction & scope

This Buy Back Policy governs the sale of your used laptop, phone, or other eligible device to Renewfy - whether through our website, our Delhi or Lucknow stores, or a pickup arranged by our team. It applies alongside our Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy, and is designed to be fair to you as a seller while complying with Indian consumer protection, contract, and e-waste law.

2. Who can sell to Renewfy

  • You must be at least 18 years old and legally competent to enter into a binding contract.
  • You must be the sole and rightful owner of the device, or have the express authority of the owner to sell it on their behalf.
  • Devices must be submitted from a serviceable location within India.

⚖ LEGAL BASIS - Indian Contract Act, 1872

A contract is only valid if entered into by parties who are competent to contract - of the age of majority, of sound mind, and not disqualified by law. This is why age and authority to sell are the first conditions of any buyback transaction.

3. Ownership & title warranty

By submitting a device for sale, you confirm and warrant that:

  • You are the legal owner of the device, and it is not stolen, lost, or reported missing.
  • The device is free of any outstanding loan, EMI, lease, or finance encumbrance - or, if it was financed, that it has been fully paid off and is unencumbered.
  • You have the legal right to transfer ownership of the device to Renewfy.
  • Any accounts, activation locks, or carrier locks (iCloud, Google, BIOS/firmware passwords, SIM locks) have been removed prior to handover.

If any of the above is found to be false, Renewfy reserves the right to refuse the transaction, withhold or reclaim payment, retain the device pending investigation, and report the matter to the appropriate authorities.

⚖ LEGAL BASIS - Sale of Goods Act, 1930 - Section 14

Every contract of sale carries an implied condition that the seller has the right to sell the goods, and an implied warranty that the goods are free from any undisclosed charge or encumbrance in favour of a third party. A seller cannot legally transfer better title than they hold - this is the legal foundation for every ownership warranty in this section.

4. Getting a quote & the evaluation process

  • You provide details of your device (brand, model, age, and declared condition) to receive an indicative quote - online, in-store, or over a call.
  • The indicative quote is based on the condition you describe and is not final.
  • Final valuation is confirmed only after our team physically inspects the device - either in-store, at a pickup, or after it's mailed in - against our grading criteria (Section 5).

5. Grading criteria

Devices are graded on functional and cosmetic condition, including but not limited to:

  • Screen condition (cracks, dead pixels, discolouration).
  • Body/chassis condition (dents, scratches, broken hinges or ports).
  • Battery health and charging function.
  • Functional performance - boot-up, keyboard, trackpad, camera, speakers, ports, and connectivity.
  • Whether the original charger/accessories are included.

The grade assigned directly determines the final offer - this is explained to you before you accept.

6. Price revision after inspection

If the device's actual condition differs materially from what was declared at the time of quote - for example, a cracked screen or non-functional battery not previously disclosed - Renewfy will share a revised offer reflecting the true condition.

You may then choose to:

  • Accept the revised offer, and proceed with the sale; or
  • Decline the revised offer, in which case the device will be returned to you within 1-7 business days, at Renewfy's cost / your cost - confirm.

A revised offer will never be lower than declared condition would justify without a documented, inspection-based reason - this protects you from arbitrary undervaluation.

⚖ LEGAL BASIS - Consumer Protection Act, 2019

Falsely representing the standard, quality, or grade of goods - in either direction - is an unfair trade practice under the Act. A price revision must be based on a genuine, demonstrable difference in condition, not used as a bait-and-switch tactic. Keeping this process transparent and documented is what keeps it lawful.

7. Data privacy & device reset

  • You are responsible for backing up your data and performing a full factory reset before handing over your device.
  • Renewfy is not liable for any data loss, or for any consequence of personal data left on a device that was not reset prior to handover.
  • As a safeguard, Renewfy also performs a certified data-wipe on every device received, in line with industry-standard data sanitisation practices, before it is refurbished or resold.
  • Devices that remain locked to a personal account (iCloud/Google/BIOS lock) cannot be accepted until the lock is removed.

⚖ LEGAL BASIS - Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023

Personal data must be processed lawfully and only for as long as necessary. Renewfy's own data-wipe process exists to ensure no seller's personal data is retained or exposed once a device changes ownership - independent of whether the seller remembered to reset it themselves.

8. Documentation required

  • A valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, Driving Licence) is required at the time of sale, for our records.
  • Original purchase invoice or proof of ownership, where available - not mandatory, but it can support a faster/higher valuation.
  • For high-value devices or bulk sales, additional documentation may be requested.

⚖ LEGAL BASIS - State second-hand goods dealer regulations

Many Indian states require dealers in second-hand goods to record seller identification for every transaction, as a safeguard against the resale of stolen property. Collecting ID at the point of sale is standard compliance practice for this category of business, not a Renewfy-specific requirement.

9. Payment terms

  • Payment is made via bank transfer or UPI to the seller's own account within 1-7 business days of final acceptance.
  • Payment is released only after final grading is confirmed and you have accepted the final offer.
  • Payment will only be made to an account in the name of the verified seller - not a third party - consistent with the ownership warranty in Section 3.

10. Packaging & shipping (mail-in sales)

  • If mailing in your device, pack it securely - original packaging where possible - to prevent transit damage.
  • Renewfy will / will not - confirm cover the cost of shipping the device to us for evaluation.
  • Renewfy is not responsible for damage caused by inadequate packaging during transit to us.
  • We recommend recording an unboxing-style video when you pack the device, as a safeguard in case of a shipping dispute.

11. Devices we cannot accept

  • Devices confirmed or suspected to be stolen, or with unresolved ownership.
  • Devices still locked to a personal account (iCloud/Google/BIOS) at the time of final handover.
  • Devices that are completely non-functional beyond economical repair, unless submitted specifically under a recycling/e-waste drop-off (not a paid buyback).
  • Devices below our minimum acceptable valuation threshold of ₹500/-, where applicable.

12. Cancellation & return of device

  • You may cancel the transaction at any point before final payment is made, and request your device back.
  • Once payment has been made and ownership has transferred, the sale is final and the device cannot be reclaimed, except where required by law (e.g., if the transaction is later found to involve a defect in your right to sell it).

13. Responsible e-waste disposal

Devices that fail grading and cannot be refurbished or resold are not discarded informally. In line with Indian e-waste law, Renewfy hands over such devices only to registered recyclers or refurbishers - never to informal scrap dealers - ensuring materials are recovered and hazardous components are handled safely.

⚖ LEGAL BASIS - E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022

Under these Rules, bulk consumers and entities handling electronic waste - including e-retailers and refurbishers - must hand over e-waste only to a registered Producer, Refurbisher, or Recycler, and are prohibited from selling it to informal or unregistered scrap dealers. This is a genuine legal obligation Renewfy follows, not just a sustainability claim.

14. Your consumer rights & grievance redressal

If you believe a buyback transaction was handled unfairly, you have real, enforceable options:

  • Raise it first with Renewfy's Customer Support (Section 18) - most issues are resolved directly.
  • If unresolved, you may escalate to Renewfy's Grievance Officer (see our Privacy Policy for current contact details).
  • You may file a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline (1915, or via the UMANG app).
  • You may file a formal complaint with your local Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, including online via the e-Daakhil portal (edaakhil.nic.in).

⚖ LEGAL BASIS - Consumer Protection Act, 2019

The Act established the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to act against unfair trade practices, and provides a tiered system of District, State, and National Consumer Commissions for dispute resolution - giving sellers, not just buyers, a real path to recourse under consumer law.

15. Limitation of liability & indemnity

Renewfy's liability in connection with any buyback transaction is limited to the agreed payment amount for that specific device. You agree to indemnify Renewfy against any claim, loss, or legal action arising from a breach of the ownership warranty in Section 3 - including where a device is later found to be stolen, financed, or not legally yours to sell.

16. Governing law & jurisdiction

This policy is governed by the laws of India. Any dispute shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts at Delhi / Lucknow, without prejudice to your right to approach a Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

17. Changes to this policy

Renewfy may update this Buy Back Policy from time to time. Changes take effect once posted on this page. Transactions already completed are governed by the version of this policy in effect at the time of that transaction.
